What this removes
The C2PA manifest, XMP declarations including trainedAlgorithmicMedia, and any EXIF or generator fields naming the tool. The cleaned file is re-scanned automatically and the report shows what a fresh scan can no longer find.
An honest limit
Content Credentials are designed to be recoverable. Where a provider supports durable credentials, provenance can be re-associated with an image later using an invisible watermark or a content fingerprint held in their database — even though the manifest is no longer in your file.
So this removes the credential from the file you hold. It does not erase the fact that the image was generated, and it cannot reach anyone else's records.
Frequently asked questions
Will removing metadata make an AI image pass as a photograph?
No. It removes one signal. Detection approaches that look at the pixels are unaffected, and disclosure obligations do not disappear because a field was deleted.
Does this change the image?
Not a single pixel. The compressed image data is copied unchanged; only the metadata segments are dropped.
